Understanding Population Aging

Population aging refers to the increasing proportion of older individuals within a society, resulting from declining birth rates and rising life expectancy. This demographic shift is a global phenomenon with significant social, economic, and healthcare implications.​​

Global Trends
  • Rising Numbers: As of 2020, there were approximately 1 billion people aged 60 years or older worldwide. This number is projected to reach 1.4 billion by 2030 and 2.1 billion by 2050. ​World Health Organization (WHO).
  • Increasing Median Age: The global median age has risen from 24 in 1950 to 29 in 2010 and is expected to reach 36 by 2050, indicating a significant shift towards older populations. ​
